Made in Portugal: Tiles

One of the many treasures you can find in Portugal streets are the tiles of some of its buildings. They are colorful and very creative, being difficult to find two that are exactly the same. In Lisboa, the capital, any narrow street can surprise you with those pieces of squared art that give colour to the city.

In Portuguese and in Spanish, those special tiles are called "Azulejos", a word that comes from the Arabic azzeleji, that means little polished stone used in the Near East. Azulejos arrived to the Iberian Peninsula in the XIV Century and have been used to decorate any type of buildings since then (churches, private residences, palaces, etc).
